5. Archie and Peyton Manning
Sport: Football

Dinners must’ve been interesting in the Manning household. "Pass the potatoes, son." "Is that a screen pass or post pattern, Dad?" Whatever Dad was serving, the son was eating it up.
Archie was a legend in college at Mississippi and in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, though his pro career was victory-challenged. He taught his children, well, though. Peyton may have been a bigger hero at Tennessee than Archie was at Mississippi, especially when he ignored NFL suitors and returned for his senior year. He didn’t win the Heisman or the national title, but he won millions of hearts. His success has continued in the NFL. He had the greatest rookie season in league history last year and this season, led the Colts to a 13-3 season and a long-awaited division title.
Archie was a better scrambler (the better to survive the woeful Saints’ offensive line of the ‘70s); Peyton appears to be a better pure passer. Then there’s another quarterback-son, Eli, another future star. We know the Mississippi freshman was paying attention at dinner.
